Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Biographia Literaria

Biographia Literaria by S.T.Coleridge is a great literary work. Coleridge’s written critical work is contained in 24 chapters of Biographia Literaria. In chapter 14 of Biographia Literaria, S.T. Coleridge thrown his philosophical-critical insights on following issues.

  • Two Cardinal Points of Poetry
  • Coleridge’s views towards Wordsworth’s poetic creed
  • Difference between Poem and Prose
  • Definition of Liegitimate Poem & Function of Poem
  • Difference between Poem and Poetry

1) Write in your words the differences between poem and prose.

There is huge difference between poem and prose. Language of prose is more natural and grammatical, while poem's language is rhymical. poems are written in Rhyme. And prose writers usually has no words limit whereas prom is written in limited words. Prose writes written their ideas in sentences while poet is written their ideas in lines. According to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the poem is distinguished form, prose, ccompositions by its immediate object is to give truth and that of poem is to please. So we can see that there are many differences between poem and prose.

2) Write in your words the differences between poem and poetry.

There are many differences between poem and poetry. First of all both are part of literature. Poem is smaller than poetry and poetry is very larger than poem, both are written in rhyRh but there are many differences between each other. And poem is part of piece and poetry is something higher than poem. And for Coleridge, poetry is wider category than a poem. Poem is form of poetry and poetry is form of art.

3) Give illustration to support your answer.

The Butterfly poem by Arun Kolatker

Here I discuss about  a poem is a literary form composed in verse. It normally gives account of personal feelings, emotions and imagination. The poem The Butterfly There is no story behind it. It is split like a second. It hinges around itself. It has no future. It is pinned down to no past. It’s a pun on the present. It’s a little yellow butterfly. It has taken these wretched hills under its wings. Just a pinch of yellow, it opens before it closes and closes before it o where is it. When I was in B.A I studied various poems. For example The Butterfly which was written by  Arun Kolatkar, an Indian poet wrote about the place- Jejuri, a temple town. Jejuri is a poor place and the hills in Jejuri show the barrenness of the place. His style is simple (English) in contrast with Mahapatra where he uses English and his ideas very effectively. Whatever he sees in Jejury they have a story of their own. The poet says there is no story behind the butterfly, the very being...
