Movie Review on Hamlet

Kenneth branagh's 'Hamlet' based on William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'

'Hamle' is the first tragedy in Shakespeare's series of great tragedies which is believed to be published in between 1601 and 1603. This play is one of his succesful, perfect and best play ever known.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as both the great writer in English language and the world pre-eminent dramatist.

'Hamlet' Directed by Kenneth branagh

Hamlet is a 1996 film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, adapted and directed by  Kenneth branagh and produced by David Barron.

• My views on screening movie 'Hamlet'

• How faithful is the movie to the original play?

I think that the movie is faithful for me because after screening movie I understand many things like, Expression of characters, pronounsation of Dialogues, expression of madness, hegemony, betrayal..etc.

But I can not said that the movie is faithful like the original play because, In the original play I could not find anything about dressing, cloths of courtyards. In the movie everyone wearing good cloths and in original play we can not find about it.

• After watching the movie, have your perception about play, character or situation changed?

After watching movie my perception about play, character or situation are changed because after watching movie I felt that hamlet is more attractive described in the book but, In the movie not more attractive like original book. And character of Ophelia is not more mentioned in the book but in the play describes many importance of her.

Do you feel aesthetic delight while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no,can you explain with reasons?

Yes,I feel asthetic delight while watching the movie. during grave digging scene, when grave diggers are digging the grave and sing a love song.this scene give me delight.

  • Do you feel 'catharsis' while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did happen? If no,can you explain with reason?

Yes,I feel 'catharsis' for two characters they are Hamlet and Ophelia. Both character are suffering from decease after death of theirs father's.this two characters are psychologically depressed after death of theirs father for that I feel catharsis.

• Does screening of movie helpful in better understanding of the play?

Yes the screening of movie is helpful in better understanding of the play. I think that this is interesting way of understanding the original text and better way for understanding Dialogues expressions and remembering.

• was there any particular scene or movement in the movie that you will cherish lifetime?

the scene in the movie that I will cherish lifetime is  the  scene of funeral of ophelia. When hamlet come to know about death of Ophelia.

•If you are director, what changes would you like to make in the remarking if movie on Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'?

If I was director of this movie I will do the changes in the movie, like Hamlet's character describe really attractive than other characters. During the watching movie I feel really attractive character is Ophelia.so I will describe Ophelia's character not attractive than hamlet.

In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of King Hamlet out side the Elsinore castle. The movie ends with the similar sequence wherein the statue of the King Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of symbolism do you read in this?

Through this symbolism,Kenneth branagh tells us that 'Revenge' is not better way of life.I think that, In the bigging symbolism is tells that better situation in the play.

Through this symbol Kenneth branagh tells us that  the result of 'Revenge'. I think that he tells that don't take any kind of revenge in our life.

While studying the play through movie which approach do you find more applicable to the play  ? Why? Give reasons with illustration.

While I studying the play through movie, first, I found the psychological approach is movie applicable to the play. Because hamlet is suffering from manic depressive hysteria after his father's death.he suffering from madness.his behaviour is cruel with women characters. Second. I found frmifemi approach, because women's characters are insulted by hamlet because gertrude after his husband's death she quickly marry with Claudius. Hamlet hate her for this. And Ophelia is sweet and innocent women.hamlet treated very cruelly and she insulted by hamlet.

Which of the above mentioned  approaches appeals you more than others?  Why? Give reasons.

I think that psychological approach shoud be appeals more than others because this play is describes disease, hegemony, revenge, suffering's human minds.so that this approach is important more than others.so that I like to appeal.

The Butterfly poem by Arun Kolatker

Here I discuss about  a poem is a literary form composed in verse. It normally gives account of personal feelings, emotions and imagination. The poem The Butterfly There is no story behind it. It is split like a second. It hinges around itself. It has no future. It is pinned down to no past. It’s a pun on the present. It’s a little yellow butterfly. It has taken these wretched hills under its wings. Just a pinch of yellow, it opens before it closes and closes before it o where is it. When I was in B.A I studied various poems. For example The Butterfly which was written by  Arun Kolatkar, an Indian poet wrote about the place- Jejuri, a temple town. Jejuri is a poor place and the hills in Jejuri show the barrenness of the place. His style is simple (English) in contrast with Mahapatra where he uses English and his ideas very effectively. Whatever he sees in Jejury they have a story of their own. The poet says there is no story behind the butterfly, the very being...
